Everyone is trying to decipher last night's season finale of Lost. While many theories abound everyone seems to still be confounded by Lost's reoccurring numbers and mysterious locale (are they trapped in the Bermuda Triangle? or perhaps in purgatory?) .
4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42...
Well any sports fan will tell you that the "key" behind the numbers... are the Yankees.
4 = Lou Gehrig
8 = Yogi Berra & Bill Dickey
15 = Thurman Munson
16 = Whitey Ford
23 = Don Mattingly
42 = Jackie Robinson (# is retired league wide)
Judging from the correlation to the Yanks retired numbers above the gang appears to indeed be lost in a triangle.... more specifically the triangle behind the left field fence known as monument park! (Refer to the map at right.)
Some of my other "Lost" Links: As you ponder that theory take some time to listen to my "Lost" interview with Lost star Jorge Garcia (he brought golf to the island - audio to be posted later,read the full interview below). For those interested in last night's other finale, check out Idol's first person booted off, Becky O'Donohue, as she gets geared up in baseball garb for Maxim. And in other stadium mysteries check out this lost clip involving Wrigley's bleacher bathroom.

For those interested below is the introduction and interview I conducted with Jorge Garcia which got bumped by my editors at the last minute... my "Lost" 10 Question piece:
Lost fans hope to hit the jackpot with Wednesday’s highly anticipated
season finale as they yearn for some insight on the island’s many
secrets including Hurley’s mysterious numbers.
4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42...
To
Hurley those numbers represent a winning lottery ticket which won him
fame, fortune, not to mention a host of bad luck. To Jorge Garcia
Lost’s numbers have won him some fame and good fortune thanks in part
to a stroke of good luck.
As the story goes executive producer
J.J. Abrams cast the former stand up comic without a specific role in
mind and yet surely enough Hurley has become one of the series breakout
characters.
Whether it involves providing his signature laid
back “Dude” discourse or creating a signature island golf course,
Hurley has welcomely added some levity to a pretty heavy situation...
crash landing onto a cursed island. Hurley the burley beachcomber has
endeared himself with his fellow castaways as well as fans alike with
his happy-go-lucky attitude despite his own baffling backstory.
Whether
or not the secret behind Hurley’s numbers gets unlocked in the last
Lost show, we hope to unveil more about the man behind the mystery in
our 10 questions with Jorge Garcia below....
1. Talk about some of the on set secrecy surrounding the finale.
JG: Well when we got the script, the top page had this disclaimer that said: “You are only getting this information because you’re part of the inner-circle and help us destroy it once you finish it” and there were pages that were missing from the script of the last episode which as we read it we were supposed to approach one of the executive producers to find out what goes on in the blank pages.
Plus when we got the script your name is written on every page, so if that script were to ever get out, they would have know it was yours. So you found yourself being extra careful.
2. Your much talked about episode aired earlier this spring... if you Jorge Garcia were to win the lottery what would be the first thing you sprung for?
JG: As far as just the basic impulse buy... it would have to be one of those endless pools. You know, the pool it’s got the current.
3. Are you superstitious in real life? Since you’ve been on such a show do you now have a fear of flying?
JG: I’m not afraid to fly although I sometimes grip the hand of the armrest a little tighter when turbulence hits. Since we’re flying back and forth from Hawaii to the mainland a lot, that image of the back of the plane breaking off does flash before me every time I board.
As far as superstitions go I inherited them from my grandmother. There’s a few basic ones like, you don’t talk bad about dead people because they’ll come back and pull your feet while you are sleeping and like my grandmother I don’t like wishing someone a happy birthday before their birthday actually happens because that can mean bad luck.
4. Your character introduced golf onto the island. Are you a big golfer? Should Sergio be worried about the arrival of the next great Garcia onto the golfing scene?
JG: As far as the filming of those golf scenes go... well let’s just say I had a lot of help. About the only thing I share with Sergio is my last name and even that’s a stretch.
Sergio is like from Spain and he’s Spanish and my Garcia’s come more from Chile, if we are related it’s way back like to who knows... Adam and Sergio and then me. But with me I come minus the golf game...
5. You were born in Omaha, Nebraska. Did you grow up a corn husker fan or have you adopted some SoCal teams?
JG: I went to UCLA so I am a big Bruin fan. When they won the NCAA in basketball it was fun to be a Bruin. I very much support my home local teams, like the Dodgers... I'm very much a home team kind of guy.
6. Before becoming an actor you earned your chops doing standup. Who do you admire as far as comedians?
JG: I haven’t done it in a while. I don’t know if I truly had the discipline to do it. I get bored kind of quickly with doing the same sets and stuff but I like Sarah Silverman a lot. I think she’s got a lot of balls to say the things she does as she is not afraid to be controversial. I also just got the Patton Oswald CD which I thought was one of the finest and funniest I’ve heard in a long time.
7. Speaking of CD’s you are reportedly a big music fan boasting a huge record collection. If you were stranded on a desert island what must have music would you bring?
JG: Well it goes without saying that you have to have the Beach Boys and maybe some Pixies to stir things up.
8. A comic book was touched upon in a couple of episodes. Were you a comic book collector/fan growing up? Are you excited about the new Batman/Superman movie franchises?
JG: I was quite obsessed with comic books for a while. As far as the new Superman movie goes, I’m anxious – I’m anxious. So far I haven’t been a big fan of the “Batman” movies. But with that and the “Star Wars” series you still have to go out and see it every time though. I still have to see what they’re doing, what the story is, and how the chapters unfold. Even if I know I’m going in and as an aficionado I might be disappointed – I still have to go to it; I still have to go see these things.
You mentioned Star Wars...
JG: Yeah the 1st three “Star Wars” movies were huge... epic for me, when I was growing up. It was such an important piece of pop-culture that I’ve got to continue and see what else they’re throwing at us now.
9. Getting back to Lost, everybody is talking about Evangeline Lilly, Kate, possibly hooking up with Jack or Sawyer. Do you think Hurley will land a lovely island inhabitant maybe next season?
JG: I don’t know but I certainly hope so It’s like you know, come on, Hurley needs some loving too
10. Can you shed a little more light on the series... is it just a dream all in a kid’s head, is it purgatory, or are we talking Lord of the Flies here?
JG: I’ve always been against the theories about it being a dream or it being purgatory because I always thought that that made it too easy to explain things. Like of course there’s a mysterious creature in the woods because it’s purgatory and there are no rules so that could work. However when I read the season’s finale, it definitely for me was the most convincing purgatory argument I’ve ever seen. There’s a lot of interesting stuff that gets revealed and they also leave a lot of stuff open ended so the audience will have a lot to talk about over the summer.
